Our friend and teammate Mark Petimezas suffered severe injuries after a cycling accident on an autumn training ride, losing use of his limbs. Mark is a beloved member of the New York City cycling community and Team CRCA / Foundation Cycling. As a category 3 racer, hard work and dedication lead to a stand out 2013 season for Mark. As anyone who has ridden or raced with Mark knows, he is incredibly friendly, generous, and always eager to help others.

What happened

On Saturday, October 26th, while riding North on 9W on a beautiful fall morning, Mark crashed badly when his wheel got tangled with another rider’s. Mark went down hard and landed on his head (he was wearing helmet) with most of the impact to the right side of his face. Injuries included severe damage to his spinal cord, a concussion, fractured cheek bone, and a fractured eye socket. Mark lost use of his limbs immediately after this accident.

What injuries remain

Mark is currently bed-ridden and faces a long road to recovery, including intense rehabilitation at Rusk Institute. Financial hardship of lost income has been coupled with mounting medical bills for his intensive and expensive medical care.

Why we need to raise money for Mark

As a consultant, Mark only gets paid when he works. We do not know when he will be able to return to work. Mark does not have disability insurance, although luckily he does have health insurance. We want to help Mark make it through these tough times by reducing his family’s stress over financial hurdles like:

  • Rent
  • Childcare for his 2 year old daughter
  • Meals
  • Medical deductibles
  • Continued care and out-patient therapy
  • Modifications to his apartment that will be needed when he goes home

Our goal

  • To raise $100,000.
  • For every cyclist to contribute in a way that is meaningful to them.
  • Pay it forward – all of us know that an accident like this could happen to each and every one of us.  Wouldn’t you want this help if it were you?

Mark’s Goal

  • To walk hand in hand with his wife and daughter.

Mark is a friend to all in the cycling community and he needs our help.  Please donate generously using the PayPal “Donate” button below. He and his family are in need of assistance.

Thank you for your support,
