Sanborn racing in the Gainesville swamps classic

Foundation goes Florida

woodster hyundiaIn the weekend when NY’ers faced their coldest days in this year’s winter, two of Foundations riders travelled down South. Alex Sanborn and Woody Baum cramped up in Woody’s hatchback, stacked their bikes on top of the car, and traded the freezing temperatures of the city for Florida’s sunshine for their first race miles of the 2016 race season.

After endless winter rides on their trainer, staring at their Zwift programme, binge watching every Netflix show, the guys couldn’t wait to trade their sweaty bedrooms turned sacred bike cave for their Hincapie Foundation Cycling New summer kits. They lined up Saturday morning for the start of the UF Weekend Swamp Classic, a three stage race in Gainesville, Florida.

Alex will race its first full season in the Pro/ Am field. After securing lots of podium places last season USA Cycling granted him the upgrade from Category 3, to Category 2 to Category 1, and all within one cycling season. To prepare for the Elite Road team’s upcoming 7 day stage race in the Dominican Republic later this month, he wanted to get some race miles in. He lined up in the Swamp Classic Road Race as well as in the Criterium.

Woody has his Category 2 upgrade in sight. He started not only in the Road Race but also secured a 9th and 4th place finish in the Criterium and Time Trail, respectively.
